Abstract: The average family in the US has access to a diverse and safe food

supply that would have been nearly inconceivable to our grandparents. As the

agricultural industry strives to increase and diversify our food supply, crop

protection chemicals continue to walk the fine lines between risk, benefit and

profitability. Before any agricultural chemical can be applied to a food crop, it

must undergo a lengthy and complicated registration process that estimates the

various risks and benefits associated with proposed uses. This involves a wide

variety of standardized testing protocols that provide data to be used in risk

assessments. This presentation will focus on agricultural chemical residues in and

on food crops – how are residues measured before the material is used

commercially, how are these residues used to predict risk, and what happens after

the material is applied on a wide-scale basis?

Bio: Dr. Rob Hummel is Senior Director of Research at Landis International,

which is an agricultural chemical research and development consulting firm

located in Valdosta, GA. Rob is principally responsible for planning and

managing scientific studies that support registration of agricultural chemicals in the

US. After earning his PhD from the entomology department North Carolina State

University in 1999, Rob began learning the project management business at Landis

by acting as Study Director for EPA-required Good Laboratory Practice studies

conducted throughout the US. Rob is continuing to develop his skills at writing

study protocols that provide clear instructions, while maintaining a reasonable

amount of flexibility in just the right areas. He’s also still learning to act like he

understands the magic behind quantitative analysis of synthetic pesticides in food

crop matrices.
